<a href="http://tinyurl.com/lnddsk6" target="_blank">Ebola</a> Virus of 2014...All you need to know about Ebola Virus:
<br />
<br />
1. It is a Central African disease that has traveled over countries in a living host to West Africa. It is easily spread by physical contact and eating contaminated bush meat. Major hosts are in five species of Bats but monkeys and apes are easily infected and killed.
<br />
<br />
2. It kills in a week, leaving no time to treat an individual.
<br />
<br />
3. It has no known vaccine or cure
<br />
<br />
4. Known cases have been experienced recently in Guniea, Liberia and Central Africa Rep, spreading eastwards and westwards towards Nigeria. Death toll so far in West Africa is over 100.
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
5. The Ebola outbreak of 2014 is the most challenging one witnessed in Africa
<br />
<br />
What we can do?
<br />
<br />
1. Avoid eating any bush meat for now! Especially Apes and Bats
<br />
<br />
2. Wash your hands as regularly as possible, especially after shaking a stranger. It is spread by contact.
<br />
<br />
3. The most straightforward prevention method during Ebola outbreaks is not touching patients, their excretion, and body fluids, or possibly contaminated materials and utensils. Patients should be isolated, and medical staff should be trained and apply strict barrier nursing techniques (disposable face mask, gloves, goggles, and a gown at all times).
<br />
<br />
Traditional burial rituals, especially those requiring embalming of bodies, should be discouraged or modified. Awareness is key, don't just read or ignore...spread this campaign before the virus spreads!

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Informal processing of electronic waste in developing countries may cause serious health and pollution problems, though these countries are also most likely to reuse and repair electronics. All electronic scrap components, such as CRTs, may contain contaminants such as lead, cadmium, beryllium, or brominated flame retardants. Electronics which are destined for reuse, resale, salvage, recycling, or disposal are all "E-WASTE". If it's NOT NEW, it's NOT NEW! </div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The big, glassy funnels inside these machines are known as cathode ray tubes or CRTs which were melted down and turned into new ones. Cathode Ray Tube." But flat-screen technology has made those monitors and televisions obsolete, reducing the demand for the recycled tube glass used in them and creating stockpiles of the useless material accumulate across the country. Now everyone has abandoned the machines with CRTs, without proper disposal. These stockpiles of glass contains lead. Cathode ray tubes have been largely replaced by flat panels that use fluorescent lights with highly toxic mercury in them. The Plastics from</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
printers, keyboards, monitors, etc -- emits brominated dioxins, heavy metals and hydrocarbons. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The government of Nigeria through <a href="http://nesrea.gov.ng/" target="_blank">NESREA</a> has done well and should be encouraged in the fight against illegal dumping of these waste in Nigeria because it affects us all. Nigeria as a dumping ground for these harmful waste materials does not do us any good. The activities of importing toxic waste into Nigeria should be condemned in the strongest terms and the offenders/defaulters should be punished appropriately. Most used machines are not tested for functionality before they are exported to Nigeria.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One solution to the growing electronic waste problem is for technology companies to design products that last longer, use fewer toxic components and are more easily recycled. By reducing both the quantity of hazardous materials used in the process and the amount of excess raw materials in stock, the quantity of waste generated can be reduced. Properly disposing or reusing electronics can help prevent health problems, create jobs, and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let me end with this - How do all these E-waste escape from Europe and America to Nigeria? That is to show how porous the seaports have become over there....</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
NB: if you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.</div>

While surfing the net, I came across this article that hit my point exactly and deemed it fit to share it through this medium.

"YOU are not a blogger. You're just a talker. <a href="http://thoughts.com/">Thoughts.com</a> is just one big chat box for you.
<br />
You post to communicate but never shared not
<br />
one insightful thought. You post only to tell your silly day-to-day activities, macho rantings and those who comment on your posts are equally non bloggers but talkers like you.
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
A real blogger will post, share his thought on things informative, educational and relevant to events. His love for his country is unequalled and thus his political views. His love for literature is genuine and has unshakeable religious conviction. His words are seriously chosen but he can also be funny. His opinion is strong and his character is based on the education he got and will never change his name to hide under different pseudonyms. A talker will shy away from commenting on his blog.
<br />
<br />
You are not a blogger. You're just a smart aleck who belong to the bandwagon of famous judgmental shallow heads and hollowheads with pointless views and mob rule mentality. Even some of the most blocked are real bloggers. Nevermind their occasional rudeness. That's another story. They post scientific articles, don't they? No you are not a blogger. You are just a talkative bug".

<br />
Hope we bloggers can accept to change from the norm and do things with the mind set of change!!!

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aeEbbW3Gz0Q/U0KKagWqGaI/AAAAAAAABDw/cc650W50sY4/s1600/%253D%253Futf-8%253FB%253FQSBkaXNhYmxlZCBtYW4uanBn%253F%253D-738158"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aeEbbW3Gz0Q/U0KKagWqGaI/AAAAAAAABDw/cc650W50sY4/s320/%253D%253Futf-8%253FB%253FQSBkaXNhYmxlZCBtYW4uanBn%253F%253D-738158" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5999509841577122210" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Before I go on, let me apologise for being "off-radar" for a LONGTIME. No need for excuses anymore because "Excuses are tools of incompetence, monuments of nothingness and whoever uses it, is not wise". </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let me start this discussion with a question: What are your feelings and reactions towards people with disabilities? Not how you know you should normally behave, but what is your true feelings at first sight?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Persons with disabilities are still often 'invisible' in society, either segregated or simply ignored as passive objects of charity. They are denied their rights to be included in the general school system, to be employed, to live independently in the community, to move freely, to vote, to participate in sport and cultural activities, to enjoy social protection, to live in an accessible built and technological environment, to access justice, to enjoy freedom to choose medical treatments and to enter freely into legal commitments such as buying and selling property.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
The most important barriers to the societal integration of disabled people are attitudinal barriers. Often, we're judged (Disabled or Not) unable to do something before we're given an opportunity to try. People who have a "disability" can do most things that a "regularly abled" person can do. They may just do them a little differently. It used to be that people heard the words disability and disabled and handicapped and immediately pictured scenes from those old black-and-white movies: A person bedridden and sickly looking, a blanket covering their frail frame and a round-the-clock nurse for full-time care.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Why? Because it was a simple fact: People with disabilities can't possibly take care of themselves, or even contribute anything worthwhile to society. A majority of persons with disabilities in Nigeria always have a sad deal in terms of acceptance, access and respect for their rights. Our society has yet to come to terms with the fact that there is ability in disability. Even amongst families, these "over able" persons are seen as the bad-luck or curse of the family.<b> HOW SAD!!!</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
We should remember <a href="http://goo.gl/a6fSz9" target="_blank">Franklin Delano Roosevelt</a>, the 32nd American President who was elected an unprecedented four times into office, was for most part of his political career confined to a wheelchair due to polio attack he suffered when he was young. His work also influenced the later creation of the United Nations and Bretton Woods. Roosevelt is consistently rated by scholars as one of the top three U.S. Presidents, along with Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. <a href="http://goo.gl/a6fSz9"></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Whether you use a reading device or glasses to read, or a wheelchair or cane to help you move around, you are capable of learning, growing, and maturing just like someone who does not use these devices. People think and react depending on what they know – and they might not know much about a particular disability or the "ability of the disabled". I see times like this as an opportunity to educate them. People living with disabilities should <b>NEVER</b> be seen less than normal. Provisions should be made for people with disabilities [especially those on wheel chairs] in our architectural designs, designs of public places like the airport, parking lot, seaport, shopping mall and so on. We should consider the disable members of our society. People with disabilities need health care and health programs for the same reasons anyone else does—to stay well, active, and a part of the community. Having physical problems does <b>NOT</b> mean mentally wrong. We have seen genius in wheelchair like Prof Chinua Achebe, blind producer like Cobhams Asuquo and many more! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Assistive technologies (AT) are devices or equipment that can be used to help a person with a disability fully engage in life activities. AT's can help enhance functional independence and make daily living tasks easier through the use of aids that help a person travel, communicate with others, learn, work, and participate in social and recreational activities. These equipment should be made available and affordable for the disabled people by government and organizations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Persons with disabilities can not assist themselves in setting up their own businesses for economic empowerment. The economic and social status make it increasingly impossible for persons with disabilities to easily gain acceptance and integration into the society. The society are comfortable and prefer giving disabled persons money on the streets to giving them paying jobs and shelter, hence persons living with disabilities see street begging as the only and sure source of income. Street begging is their main source of income and their daily bread depends primarily on that. Platforms for persons with disabilities should be highly encouraged to assist in providing empowerment programmes for disabled persons in the areas on mentoring, skill acquisition, training and sensitization.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
I would also love to add that some of the people we refer to as disabled weren't born disabled. Accidents and illnesses cause deformities. In such cases, they are unavoidable, therefore we should not write off the disabled. I believe there are many contributions you have that can help enlighten the public. Let's hear it!!!</div>

While surfing the internet, i came across Dukwe Inc. alias New Nation. Dukwe has taken the role as the world’s first private sector response to the issue of global poverty and under development. Dukwe’s approach to realizing the demands of this mission is seen in
the 21 pillars of Dukwe, which are; power, housing, IT, telecom, roads,
transportation, health care, justice, food, water, security, education,
mortgages, insurance, emergency relief, credit, environment, financial
planning, faith, debit, and credit. For the main time, only one programme has been fully launched which is "Grey and Strong".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6BwaqfMI7kE/UwsYJSjuHnI/AAAAAAAABDA/XWgY2YiYyXo/s1600/grey+and+strong+pix.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6BwaqfMI7kE/UwsYJSjuHnI/AAAAAAAABDA/XWgY2YiYyXo/s1600/grey+and+strong+pix.jpg" height="312" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Grey and Strong is a wonderful social welfare scheme specifically
designed to cater for the elderly people in Africa, through various
social benefits that come with their membership and participation in
this unparalleled programme.<br />
<br />
It ensures a better life for the people above the age of 50, by
introducing social security and protection through provision of basic
needs and infrastructures for the elderly.<br />
It also advocates against the neglect of the senior citizens in Africa,
in order to improve their standard of living, as obtainable in
advanced countries of the world. The scheme has been designed to further
encourage the provision of social benefits for the elderly by both
public and private sectors in various African countries.<br />
The welfare services offered by this empowerment programme covers
financial assistance, elderly care homes, health support, recreational
zones, legal advice and defense, among others.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Millions of avoidable deaths of the elderly occur every year, due to
several reasons arising from neglect by friends, family and government
agencies, who have all failed to provide proper care for the elders in
the society. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Normally, Grey & Strong will require monthly financial contributions
of not less than N3, 000 monthly before reaching the age for benefits
to partake of it. However, as an introduction and show of our serious
desire to change the story of elderly care in Nigeria, we are giving
away the unprecedented benefits to only 100,000 people for free. To be
fair in our choice of recipients, we are giving the free Grey &
Strong coverage certificate to anyone that purchases our branded blood
pressure and blood sugar test kits which in health care terms, is almost
compulsory for anyone above 45years old that wants to live long. We are
also giving out our extremely help health guide handout prepared from
extensive research and written by insightful and compassionate health
care professionals. The kits along with the healthcare manual and its
audio costs </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
N15, 000 which can be paid in two or more installments
before end of the offer and comes with Free Grey & Strong coverage
certificate which will have the beneficiary receiving the benefits of <a href="http://greyandstrong.com/benefit.php" target="_blank">Grey & Strong</a> for life. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Through these pillars Dukwe hopes to create programmes that will increase the
flow of money to marginalized segments of the global population, free
the minds of the downtrodden, and empower the disadvantaged segments of
the global population, door to door, person to person, community to
community, and at a financial profit to our firm. Join Us!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Healthy trees mean ... healthy communities. Tree-filled neighbourhoods lower levels of domestic violence and are safer and more sociable. One hundred mature trees catch about 139,000 gallons of rainwater per year. Strategically placed trees save up to 56% on annual air-conditioning costs. Trees reduce runoff by breaking rainfall thus allowing the water to flow down the trunk and into the earth below the tree. This prevents stormwater from carrying pollutants to the ocean. When mulched, trees act like a sponge that filters this water naturally and uses it to recharge groundwater supplies.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting albino in Nigeria. Trees reduce UV-B exposure by about 50 percent, thus providing protection to children on school campuses and playgrounds - where children spend hours outdoors. Working with trees or spending periods of time with them of course has an even greater impact and evidence suggests that this can lessen the risk of developing serious illness. The restoration of trees and woodland to the landscape also becomes crucial for healthy humans and healthy ecosystems.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
A fruit tree is different. What you see is only a tiny fraction of what you get. For even when all the fruit have been consumed, there remains vast potential in the tree. It has the ability to produce more fruit, and more, for many generations. Fruits are a good source of vitamins, antioxidants, flavenoids, fibre and minerals especially magnesium & potassium. Each fruit contains different minerals & vitamins so eat a variety of fruits so your body can select which nutrients it needs from each fruit. For the largest part fruit consists of water just like the human body does; Fruit is 100% bad-cholesterol free, Fruit stimulates the memory, the miraculous healing effects of fruit, fruits makes you feel better, fruit is an inexpensive nutrition and fruit is the most natural food.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
The importance of trees to the Human health and the society as a whole, can not be over emphasised as it is clear that Humans can not survive without trees. Trees make life more pleasant. We feel serene, peaceful, restful, and<br />
tranquil in a grove of trees. We are "at home" there. The strong ties between people and trees are most evident in the resistance of community residents to removing trees to widen streets. The stature, strength, and endurance of trees give them a cathedral-like quality. Because of their potential for long life, trees frequently are planted as living memorials. We often become personally attached to trees that we or those we love have planted. PLANT A TREE today!!!!</div>

<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wXWdUC68vEA/Uqg8BIkjIQI/AAAAAAAABCk/0iSzux3onbc/s320/%253D%253Futf-8%253FB%253FMTAtcHJvZHVjZSB0cmVlLmpwZw%253D%253D%253F%253D-723271" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5956076497375797506" /></div>
<br />
<div class="mobile-photo">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have discussed the importance of trees to the environment in the previous article, explaining how it acts as a Carbon Sink and helping us survive on this earth. One hundred trees remove 53 tons of carbon dioxide and 430 pounds of other air pollutants per year. Simply put, trees promote life. Not only do trees produce oxygen and sequester carbon dioxide, they also provide homes for animals, recharge groundwater, replace soil nitrates, prevent erosion and more. The addition of an indigenous tree to any environment will have countless environmental benefits. That said, trees also helps us economically and socially, but we'll be discussing its economical importance. </div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Money does grow on trees! Fruit and olive trees can provide produce that can be used in feeding schemes or sold by schools and communities. Indigenous trees increase property values and can provide natural air conditioning for homes and classrooms. Properly cared for, Trees are valuable and growing assets worth three times the investment. They provided additional necessities such as shelter, medicine, and tools. Today, their value continues to increase and more benefits of trees are being discovered as their role expands to satisfy the needs created by our modern lifestyles. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Wood was the very first fuel, and is still used for cooking and heating by about half of the world's population. Trees provide timber for building construction, furniture manufacture, tools, sporting equipment, and thousands of household items. Wood pulp is used to make paper.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are all aware of apples, oranges and the countless other fruits and nuts provided by trees, as well as the tasty syrup of North American sugar maples. But did you know the bark of some trees can be made into cork and is a source of chemicals and medicines? Quinine and aspirin are both made from bark extracts. The inner bark of some trees contains latex, the main ingredient of rubber.<b> How many more uses can you name?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are not any real disadvantages of trees speaking from the perspective of human life. The advantages of trees, however, are numerous. The public should be encourage and educated on the need to PLANT TREES and also to invest in products manufactured from trees. When we encourage local manufacturers, the economy grows and the rate of unemployment is drastically reduced. To grow SMSE, the government, companies and organisations like churches and even individuals can train mostly the YOUTHS on manufacturing products from trees such as books, photographic film, road building materials, polish, disposable medical clothing, stain remover, furniture making and many other products. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But again, it is not enough to encourage a business and FAIL to create a market for it. These products when manufactured by our YOUTHS/citizens, should be patronised by us (Nigerians). Exporting opportunities should be put in place as is done in the agricultural sector. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tree is Life!!!!!</div>

<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fBuZ-s4XBkk/UqWZ0pJbLqI/AAAAAAAABCU/kZ-_2BgKRe4/s320/%253D%253Futf-8%253FB%253FTmVlbS10cmVlLmpwZw%253D%253D%253F%253D-729127" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5955335211944980130" /></div>
<br />
<div class="mobile-photo">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Man needs oxygen which is the waste product of tree, while trees need carbon dioxide which is also a waste from man for survival. Because trees remove carbon dioxide from the air as they grow, tree planting can be used as a geoengineering technique to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Deforestation is responsible for 18-25% of global climate change. I am encouraging tree planting to mitigate the effects of climate change.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While the benefits of tree planting are subject to debate, the costs are low compared to many other mitigation options. </div>
<a name='more'></a>The cost effectiveness of tropical reforestation is due not only to growth rate, but also to farmers from tropical developing countries who voluntarily plant and nurture tree species which can improve the productivity of their lands. As little as twenty thousand Naira will plant 900 trees, enough to annually remove as much carbon dioxide as is annually generated by the fossil-fuel usage in Nigeria. <br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The lifestyles of our people with regard to the environment remain a pointer that we have a long way to go. It is regrettable that while governments are spending millions of naira to plant trees, people who move to new sites simply continue the culture of indiscriminately cutting every tree met on sight including fruit trees that can serve as food supplement. When the trees are not cut, people opt for the worse; set the site on fire as an easier way of clearing it. Nigeria don't appreciate preparedness and prevention of disaster but wait for problem before taking action despite our weak infrastructural development. While it is possible to blame government for pathetic health facilities, pitiable educational condition and weak infrastructure, climate change challenge is a collective responsibility.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The gains of planting trees is to filter pollution from the air, help recycle water, prevent soil loss, create shade, give shelter from wind and rain, provide homes for animals, make food for humans and wildlife, and to provide an interesting soothing, learning environment for children and your community. Engage your community by sharing the many benefits of trees and proper tree planting techniques. Start putting down roots and contributing to the future. </div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ecFWEuysOa4/UpxaDzo5dFI/AAAAAAAABB0/YNH-sH2hgIQ/s1600/%253D%253Futf-8%253FB%253FTURHLU1hbGktY2hpbGQtbGFib3VyLWEtMDA3LmpwZw%253D%253D%253F%253D-782204"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ecFWEuysOa4/UpxaDzo5dFI/AAAAAAAABB0/YNH-sH2hgIQ/s320/%253D%253Futf-8%253FB%253FTURHLU1hbGktY2hpbGQtbGFib3VyLWEtMDA3LmpwZw%253D%253D%253F%253D-782204" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5952731828924806226" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Employing children to do tedious and extremely difficult jobs that robs them of their childhood, right to education, and affects them mentally, physically, socially and morally is not only dangerous but also harmful.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although not all work done by children should be classified as child labour, activities such as helping their parents around the home, assisting in a family business or earning pocket money outside school hours and during school holidays. These kinds of activities contribute to children's development and to the welfare of their families; they provide them with skills and experience, and help to prepare them to be productive members of society during their adult life.
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All forms of slavery or practices similar to slavery, such as the sale and trafficking of children, debt bondage and forced or compulsory labour, including forced or compulsory recruitment of children for use in armed conflict, offering of a child for prostitution, for the production of pornography or for pornographic performances, are all forms of <b>CHILD LABOUR</b>.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Nigeria, and indeed Africa, poverty is the greatest single cause behind child labour. For impoverished households, income from a child's work is usually crucial for his or her own survival or for that of the household. Lack of meaningful alternatives, such as affordable schools and quality education, is another major factor. Even when schools are sometimes available, they are too far away, difficult to reach, unaffordable or the quality of education is poor. In many cultures the education of girls is less valued or girls are simply not expected to need formal schooling, and these girls pushed into child labour such as providing domestic services. Child labour is more common among children of illiterates.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Solving this issue has to be done collectively. The government alone can not tackle child labour.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VJxW7qahKSQ/UpW_eDl9DRI/AAAAAAAABBk/z-s7nIDFo0U/s1600/%253D%253Futf-8%253FB%253FMDAxLkpQRw%253D%253D%253F%253D-792007"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VJxW7qahKSQ/UpW_eDl9DRI/AAAAAAAABBk/z-s7nIDFo0U/s320/%253D%253Futf-8%253FB%253FMDAxLkpQRw%253D%253D%253F%253D-792007" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5950873005721455890" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is that time of the year when every thing goes dry. Apart from the cold and dust that it brings, harmattan also comes with gusty winds. The level of dust in the air is so thick during this period that it severely limits visibility and blocks the sun for several days, comparable to a heavy fog. This could cause spontaneous nosebleeds, increase in cases of conjunctivitis, asthma, and dry cough among others, during the period.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So staying warm is needed. Bush burning to clear farm site or to hunt rodents and other animals should be minimised or avoided. Also, burning refuse dump should be greatly minimized this period.
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The fire services nationwide should be properly equipped and ready to respond to emergencies promptly. It is inexcusable that in an environment prone to fire outbreaks, fire service department will lack water to fight fire. Water hydrant in specific areas in towns and villages is a good way to start in the preparation.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is important to enlighten people about the hazards of handling fire in the dry season, and to anticipate emergencies and prepare for them.

<br />
<div class="mobile-photo">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Driving while either intoxicated or drunk is dangerous and drivers with high blood alcohol content or concentration (BAC) are at greatly increased risk of car accidents, highway injuries and vehicular deaths. Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive. Alcohol affects everybody's driving for the worse. It creates a feeling of overconfidence, makes judging distance and speed more difficult and slows your reactions so it takes longer to stop. The poor quality of <a href="about:invalid#zClosurez" target="_blank">Nigerian roads</a>, as well as the lack of enforcement of penalties against drunk driving, has led to a large number of accidents.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Every now and then, someone is injured because of this entirely preventable crime. At any given point we potentially share the roads with different people with three or more drunk driving offenses. Taking away their licenses isn't enough; most still drive anyway. Most of these drunk drivers are people that are supposed to have been arrested for one crime or the other, that is why we should support the law enforcement agencies.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Possible prevention measures examined here include establishing DWI courts, suspending or revoking driver licenses, impounding or confiscating vehicle plates, impounding or immobilizing vehicles, enforcing open container bans, increasing penalties such as fines or jail for drunk driving, and mandating alcohol education. Safety seat belts, air bags, designated drivers, and effective practical ways to stay sober are also discussed.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There should be employment consequences for drunk drivers and inability securing visas. It will help reducing this crime a little.

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is so sad that our healthcare delivery system is almost utterly neglected by the government as not much happens even in the basic area of primary health care. The state of public healthcare infrastructure, along with other structural challenges, such as the difficulty in attracting and retaining skills, has also led to a decline in rendering health services. The Local government councils which is supposed to be responsible for this assignment, pockets the LITTLE that their state governments releases.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The government and the Elites are not conversant with the irritating state of the healthcare system of this country because they and their families are patients of foreign hospitals. Political leaders at the state and even the federal level only pay lip service to the state of our healthcare delivery system. We have heard of governors and senators flown abroad for "MEDICAL CHECK-UP". As little as a medical check up, this tells that we either have unqualified doctors or inadequate infrastructure or even both. No leader thinks of hospitals because there is a conventional preference – 'oversea' treatment. </div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our Hospitals are in a deplorable condition and in dire need of immediate government's attention. The buildings of some government hospitals are dilapidated with leaking roofs. -- How can doctors give there best in such conditions?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although political opponents are more concerned about the politics of the medical travels of Nigerian leaders, such as the length of stay, money spent etc, the real concern should be why Nigerian doctors and hospitals are not good enough for those in power. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A recent ranking of leading hospitals in Africa and the lot of Nigerian hospitals on the log will shock those that are still in doubt of crisis in the country's health system. According to the web-based (Webometric) ranking of hospitals for 2013, only 17 Nigerian hospitals were listed among top 222 in Africa. And of these 17, only two are government-owned hospitals – the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta in Ogun State and the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gombe. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
None of the state-controlled hospitals and federal-owned teaching hospitals, plus National Hospital, Abuja made the list. Service Compact with all Nigerians (SERVICOM), a Federal Government service delivery initiative also evaluated all Federal Hospitals in the country recently and concluded, "no hospital was delivering praiseworthy services." Our teaching hospitals function as mere consulting clinics. Our public hospitals and most especially the tertiary hospitals focuses on its individual goals rather than the corporate goal and interests of the health care system. The nation's health care requires the leadership that will improve processes, and be courageous enough to discard dysfunctional, outdated and ineffective medical cultures and practices, while adapting and re-orienting our health care to local challenges and global ideals, for the benefit of the Nigerian people. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is why we constantly see on TV, people asking for financial help to enable them go for surgeries abroad. Yet, every year we throw new medical doctors to the society from our tertiary schools.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To treat this injured system, a modular system in the health sector should be employed supported by various standard hospitals and world class laboratories that are fully equipped with standard facilities. A new kind of orientation and leadership, at every level of the health care system, that will organise the system into teams, measure performance and outcomes not by the volume of work, patients seen, staff strength, number of professionals trained or the number of bed spaces (most of which may be unoccupied for most of the year), but by the actual results and benefit derived from the processes. For this reason, there is a growing discussion about a possible role for public–private partnerships (PPPs), which some believe could offer part of the answer to the challenges. Public Private partnership should be highly encouraged to ensure the maintenance for the hospitals.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A modular system shows that we can have a fully equipped world class orthopaedic hospital that treats EVERY bone issue and researches for solution in a state supported by standard hospitals in every Local Government Area in the country. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Why go modular? It is quick to deploy, economical and scalable.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We need to make healthcare more accessible to more people and need to come together and figure out how to do it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What do you think?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
OFF THE COAST OF FUKUSHIMA, Japan — Twelve miles out to sea from the severely damaged and leaking nuclear reactors at Fukushima, a giant floating wind turbine signals the start of Japan's most ambitious bet yet on clean energy.<br />
When this 350-foot-tall windmill is switched on next month, it will generate enough electricity to power 1,700 homes. Unremarkable, perhaps, but consider the goal of this offshore project: to generate over 1 gigawatt of electricity from 140 wind turbines by 2020. That is equivalent to the power generated by a nuclear reactor.<br />
The project's backers say that offshore windmills could be a breakthrough for this energy-poor nation. They would enable Japan to use a resource it possesses in abundance: its coastline, which is longer than that of the United States. <br />
<a name='more'></a>With an exclusive economic zone — an area up to 200 miles from its shores where Japan has first dibs on any resources — that ranks it among the world's top 10 largest maritime countries, Japan has millions of square miles to position windmills.<br />
The project is also a bid to seize the initiative in an industry expected to double over the next five years to a global capacity of 536 gigawatts, according to the industry trade group Global Wind Energy Council. The Japanese have lagged at wind turbine manufacturing, which is dominated by European and Chinese makers.<br />
The project's turbines, and even the substation and electrical transformer equipment, float on giant platforms anchored to the seabed.<br />The Japanese government is paying the 22 billion yen, or $226 million, cost of building the first three wind turbines off Fukushima, part of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's push to make renewable energy a pillar of his economic growth program. After that, a consortium of 11 companies, including Hitachi, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Shimizu and Marubeni, plan to commercialize the project.<br />
The biggest challenge for the Fukushima project comes from local fishermen, who have not been able to fish since the disaster and who fear that the project will take away their fishing grounds. Trawlers, in particular, would no longer be able to operate around the farm. On the other hand, there are hopes that the giant chains that anchor the turbines to the seabed will eventually encourage colonies of fish and seaweed.<br />

Fifa President Sepp Blatter paid tribute to Nigeria's late football hero Rashidi Yekini yesterday.
<br />
<br />
Yekini who scored Nigeria's first World Cup goal, and remains the country's all-time top scorer with 37 goals from 58 games for the senior national team, died on 4th May 2012.<br />
<a name='more'></a>
<br />
<br />
The former Olympiacos and Vitoria Setubal striker would have turned 50 on 23rd of October if he were alive, and Blatter tweeted a tribute in honour of the legend's birthday.
<br />
<br />
"Rasheed Yekini would have been 50 today. His name as scorer of Nigeria's first World Cup goal lives on," the message on Blatter's official twitter handle read.
<br />
<br />
Yekini was top scorer in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations enroute to the Super Eagles winning the competition which he was also adjudged to be the Most Valuable Player.

<div style="text-align: justify;">
A US Republican Sen. Ted Cruz while comparing the glitches plaguing the website for President Barack Obama's signature health care law also succeeded in insulting Nigeria, the world's largest black community.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Senator, who is considered as the Tea Party favourite received a rousing ovation during a rally of more than 1,000 supporters Monday in Houston while speaking out about the Affordable Care Act, known also as Obamacare.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"You may have noticed that all the Nigerian email scammers have become a lot less active lately," Cruz said, according to the Houston Chronicle. "They all have been hired to run the Obamacare website."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cruz told supporters that he's working for them and not for D.C. "party bosses."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"People are saying mean things about me," Cruz said, according to the Chronicle. "Who cares? At the end of the day, I don't work for the party bosses in Washington. I work for each and every one of you. What they don't understand is that we're standing here together. We've got a problem in Washington. They're not listening to the American people."</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cruz played an active role in the recent Republican led US government shutdown over the party's opposition to the Affordable Care Act, speaking on the Senate floor for more than 21 hours.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some political observers see Cruz as Texas' most popular Republican but his approval ratings across the country may be slipping.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
National polls have shown that while Americans in general don't love the health care law, they oppose defunding it — especially if it means shutting down the government. And many of Cruz's Senate colleagues have bemoaned the shutdown for tarnishing the GOP's image.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In consolation to Nigerians, Republicans are not strangers to insulting other countries. Mitt Romney, while running on the platform of the Republican party during last year's US Presidential campaign, said he wasn't sure London could host a successful Olympic games while on a visit to Britain.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Romney's remark did not go unnoticed by President Obama who said he wondered how his challenger could become an effective Commander-in-Chief if he could go around insulting America's most powerful ally, the UK.</div>

<br />
<br />
A recent survey has shown that the Nigeria police Force, NPF, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, are the most corrupt of federal government agencies in the country.<br />
The survey by the CLEEN Foundation in collaboration with the McArthur Foundation, a copy of which was given to journalists at a media briefing Monday in Abuja, said the government agencies topped the list of the ranking in a 2013 National Crime Victimisation and Safety survey conducted by the body.<br />
The report also identified a weak and corrupt judiciary as some of the constraints militating against the fight against corruption.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
According to the report, some of the states leading in the corruption index include Rivers, Borno, Cross River, Niger, Gombe, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Anambra and Kwara, while the lowest incidences of corruption were recorded in Katsina, Ogun and Akwa Ibom States.<br />
Speaking at the public presentation of the survey findings, Executive Director, CLEEN Foundation, Mrs. Kemi Okenyodo, said the survey was aimed at tracking patterns of crime in the country and finding solutions to them.<br />
According to Okenyodo, the survey, which was conducted with 11,518 respondents drawn from all the states of the country, shed light on the experience of victims of r*pe, domestic violence, robbery, kidnap and murder, among others.<br />
<br /> <br />Some of the federal government agencies listed and their rate of propensity to bribery include the police – 33%, Nigerian Immigration Service – 26%, ICPC – 25%, Nigerian Customs Service – 24%, Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) – 23%, EFCC – 23%, Federal Roads Safety Commission – 20%, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps – 19%.<br />
Others are tax/revenue officials – 18%, municipal/local government councillors – 18%, State Security Service (SSS) – 18%, National Assembly members – 17%, local government officials – 16%, lower court officials – 15%, higher courts officials – 14%, and lecturers and professors of tertiary institutions – 10%.<br />
Organisations, officials and agencies that scored below 10% on the index include post office, gas/petrol attendants, prison warden/officers, primary and secondary school teachers, and doctors and nurses.<br />
"The findings of the survey showed that bribery and corruption among government officials in Nigeria remains high. Nearly one out of every four respondents admitted having paid a bribe or having been asked to pay bribes by government officials before services could be rendered to them.<br />
"The 2013 survey also showed that bribery and corruption among public officials such as the police, customs officers, court personnel, tax officials, anti-corruption agencies and PHCN employees were higher in Rivers, Borno, Cross River, Niger, Gombe, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Anambra and Kwara States.<br />
"The lowest incidences were recorded in Katsina, Ogun and Akwa Ibom States," the survey presentation read in part.<br />

<br />
<br />
Sierra Leone police have arrested a newspaper editor and another journalist for publishing an article comparing President Ernest Bai Koroma to a rat, officials said on Monday, stirring concern over press freedom in the West African country.
<br />
<br />
Jonathan Leigh, who edits the Independent Observer newspaper, was detained with another member of staff on Thursday after he wrote the editorial alleging friction between Koroma and his vice-president Sam Sumana.
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
The article said Koroma, a former insurance executive elected in 2007, was behaving like a rat.
<br />
<br />
Ibrahim Koroma, head of Sierra Leone's Criminal Investigations Department, said Leigh had breached the Public Order Act of 1965 by committing seditious libel. Leigh has not yet been officially charged.
<br />
<br />
"He is bringing the name of President Koroma and the whole cabinet into disrepute," said Koroma of the investigation department, who is not related to the president.
<br />
<br />
A spokesman for president Koroma said the leader had filed a complaint "like any aggrieved citizen".
<br />
<br />
During Koroma's tenure, Sierra Leone has been tolerant of negative press coverage and placed few restrictions on media.
<br />
<br />
The country, still recovering from a brutal 11-year civil war that ended in 2002, was this year upgraded to 'free' from 'partly free' by global press watchdog Freedom House.
<br />
<br />
However, rights groups say recent events suggest a change in attitude.
<br />
<br />
Koroma's Special Executive Assistant Sylvia Blyden stirred criticism from press freedom bodies this year when she warned media to "prepare for a massive and long overdue sanitization".
<br />
<br />
Blyden, publisher of a pro-government newspaper, said the only option was for the government to invoke the Public Order Act. The act has been branded outdated by press freedom and human rights activists.
<br />
<br />
"The government prided itself saying it has a near-perfect human rights record" said Kelvin Lewis, president of the Sierra Leone association of journalists. "But that seems to be no longer the case."

<br>BlackBerry is resuming the rollout of iPhone and Android apps for its popular BlackBerry Messenger mobile social messaging service.
<br>
<br>In a blog post, the company said the free BBM apps will start showing up in Google Play, Apple App Store and some Samsung App Stores.
<br>
<br>In order to make sure all goes smoothly, you'll need to line up for a spot by visiting BBM.com from your phone's browser and entering your information. You'll get an email when your turn comes up.
<br>
<br>If you have already signed up at <a href="http://bbm.com">bbm.com</a> you should be able to start using the app immediately.
<br>
<br>Last month, the company paused the rollout of the apps after an unreleased version of the Android app was posted online. About a million Android users jumped in within seven hours to grab that version, which the company pulled back.
<br>
<br>In the blog post, the company noted that more than a million people also found a way to "sideload" BBM onto iPhones.
<br>
<br>In May, the struggling Canadian firm announced that it would be rolling out BBM, perhaps the company's most popular service, to other mobile platforms. It had been exclusive to BlackBerry smartphones. The service features BBM Chat for instant messaging with other users. Additionally, each user has a unique PIN, so you don't have to give out your phone number to use the service - a privacy feature.
<br>
<br>The company has slashed 4,500 jobs in a last-ditch move to recharge itself. It has so far failed to invigorate its business despite unveiling a new smartphone line and software in January. The company is now an acquisition target.

Some people at the viewing centre ran away when he shot me while others asked him to drop the gun but he continued threatening that he will kill me and leave the job. The sales girl called the police and they came and picked me and brought me to this hospital," he narrated.<p>Counsel to the victim, Celestine Nwagu, said they were demanding that justice be done in the matter.<p>"Police officers who are supposed to protect the lives of Nigerians now shoot at innocent citizens. It is not acceptable and we are calling on the Inspector General of Police to intervene and also the FCT commission of the Police to bring the culprit to book," he said.<p><br>
